The Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus) is a captivating presence in aquariums, valued for its unique markings and lively character. These fish are favoured by aquarists for their blend of visual charm and robustness, which makes them suitable for both novice and experienced keepers.
Known for their sociable nature, Clown Loaches thrive in groups, forming complex social hierarchies that enrich the aquarium's dynamics. Their playful interactions not only add entertainment but also highlight the importance of social engagement for their well-being. This makes the Clown Loach an essential and dynamic member of any aquatic community.
Compatibility
Housing medium-sized, robust community fish with Clown Loaches is viable, but their potentially large size requires a spacious aquarium. Adding 'ither fish' from the barb, danio, rasbora, and tetra families encourages Clown Loaches to be more active during the day, enhancing the aquarium's social dynamics and ecological balance. An aquarium with effective filtration, strong water flow, and adequate oxygenation is crucial for mimicking their natural habitat. A fine, smooth sand substrate protects their sensitive barbels, while plenty of shaded hideaways, like bogwood and caves, ensure their comfort. Regular bi-weekly water changes of 10-15% and strict nitrate management are essential for optimal water quality.
Diet
Clown Loaches display omnivorous and inclusive feeding behaviour. To ensure their health and vigour, providing a balanced diet is essential, incorporating high-quality dried foods alongside live and frozen varieties enriched with vegetables such as cucumber, melon, spinach, or zucchini. Due to their fondness for snails, keeping them with specific snail species within the aquarium is not recommended, as they may significantly reduce the snail population.
Origin and Environment
Clown Loaches originate from the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, located in Indonesia. Clown Loaches typically occupy soft, acidic waters with thick vegetation that provides plenty of shade and leaf litter. They prefer clear streams, but due to flooding, these fish often have to move into flooded flood plains, murky and blackwater lakes, and rivers for several months of the year. Clown Loaches can be found in plains of hilly areas, adding a unique and captivating element to their environment. Adding Clown Loaches to your aquarium is an excellent way to showcase their exceptional beauty and contribute to their conservation efforts.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
