Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi), native to South America, are ideal additions to any aquarium due to their hardiness, peaceful disposition, and lively nature.
To create a striking shoaling effect, keeping these Tetras in large groups of at least eight or more is advisable. This will allow them to form tight groups and become the focal point of the aquarium. Keeping these fish together will help them feel more confident and avoid becoming stressed or losing their vibrant colouration.
Compatibility
When considering suitable tankmates for Black Neon Tetras, species such as Tetras, Hatchetfish, Pencilfish, Corydoras Catfish, and small to medium-sized Cichlids are recommended. Larger and more aggressive fish should be avoided to prevent intimidation and potential harm to these delicate Tetras. Implementing a peat filter system and a dark sandy substrate is optimal to enhance the vibrant pigmentation of Black Neon Tetras. Optionally, incorporating beech or oak leaves into the substrate bed, replaced before decomposition, can further enhance the environment. Adding vegetation and strategically placed driftwood elements is essential. Providing ample open space for unhindered swimming is crucial, as Black Neon Tetras are active swimmers. Finally, ensuring a gentle surface current will contribute to their well-being.
Diet
In order to maintain the best health and colouration of Black Neon Tetras, a varied diet is recommended for optimal nutrition. This can include high-quality flakes, granules, and live and frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, daphnia, Moina, and brine shrimp. To ensure their nutritional needs are met, it is important to feed these Tetras multiple times a day but only provide them with an amount they can consume within 3 minutes or less.
Origin and Environment
The Black Neon Tetra is native to the Taquari and Paraguay River Basins in southern Brazil in South America. In the wild, these Tetras inhabit various environments, including creeks, small tributaries, areas of flooded forests, and sandbanks. One of the most intriguing aspects of their natural habitat is the unique water conditions they prefer. These Tetras require very acidic water, which is often stained a rich, tea-brown colour from an abundance of tannins. These tannins are released from the breakdown of decaying organic matter and leaf litter on the substrate of their habitat. Creating similar water conditions in a home aquarium can be challenging, but it can be done with the proper equipment and knowledge.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
