The Blind Cave Fish (Astyanax mexicanus) stands out for its resilience and calm nature, positioning it as an ideal selection for novice aquarium enthusiasts and a fitting component of various community tanks.
Despite their plain, subdued colouration, Blind Cave Fish are fascinating due to their eyeless, pigment-free appearance. Remarkably, they navigate effortlessly without eyesight by relying on their sensitive lateral lines to sense minor changes in water pressure. Contrary to expectations of social interaction, the Blind Cave Fish does not show enhanced sociability or well-being in group settings. Instead, these intriguing fish are inclined towards individual exploration and exhibiting instinctual behaviours within their habitat.
Compatibility
For Blind Cave Fish, it's advisable to steer clear of pairing them with slow-moving or particularly shy companions, since these Tetras might inadvertently nip at others during feeding times. This tendency stems more from their exploratory feeding method than from inherent aggression, underscoring the need for careful selection of compatible aquarium mates. Blind Cave Fish thrive in environments that mimic their natural setting, favouring tanks with dim lighting and a rocky, gravel-like bottom. As they age, these Tetras may develop somewhat assertive behaviour.
Diet
Ensuring a balanced and nutrient-rich diet is crucial for the health and well-being of the Mexican Tetra. The dietary regimen for these fish is relatively simple, encompassing a mix of premium dry foods, including flakes, granules, and pellets, complemented by a variety of small live and frozen fare. Due to their advanced sensory abilities, Mexican Tetras may require more time to locate and ingest their meals than other fish species.
To address this, frequent feeding within a consistent timeframe is advised to guarantee they obtain sufficient nutrients and sustain optimal health.
Origin and Environment
The Blind Cave Fish is native to the Nearctic realm and can be found in a range of waterways throughout Texas and Mexico. These fish are particularly prevalent in the Nueces and Pecos Rivers, as well as the Rio Grande. In their natural habitat, Mexican Tetras inhabit backwaters and pools of rivers and creeks, preferring areas with a rocky or sandy substrate. Interestingly, these fish have also been known to seek shelter in underground caves and caverns. During the winter season, some populations of Blind Cave Fish are known to migrate to warmer waters in search of more hospitable conditions.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
