The Buenos Aires Tetra (Hyphessobrycon anisitsi) stands out as a relatively peaceful, resilient, and active fish species, which makes it a perfect candidate for beginner hobbyists and community aquariums.
Known for their hardiness and longevity, Buenos Aires Tetras do not require special requirements or conditions to flourish. They thrive optimally in groups of six or more, as such arrangements minimize aggression and alleviate stress.
Compatibility
With their size and agility, Buenos Aires Tetras are well-suited as tank mates for territorial fish like small Central American Cichlids or Eartheaters, helping diffuse aggression in the aquarium. They also pair well with other similarly sized, peaceful Tetras, Barbs, Danios, and Rasboras, as well as Corydoras Catfish and small Plecos or Loaches for bottom diversity. For their well-being, a minimum 115-litre tank is necessary to provide sufficient space, especially for active swimmers in a school. Ensuring clean, oxygen-rich water through regular checks and a robust filtration system is crucial. A fine gravel or sand substrate, along with rocks, driftwood, and plants, creates an appealing and stress-reducing environment. Adequate lighting should support plant growth without stressing the fish. Regular tank maintenance, including bi-weekly water changes and substrate cleaning, is vital for a healthy aquarium.
Diet
Buenos Aires Tetras are well-known for their flexibility in terms of diet, readily consuming various food types, including dried, flake, and freeze-dried options. However, to ensure these Tetras maintain their optimal health, condition, and vibrant colouration, it's recommended that they supplement their diet with live foods. Suitable choices include daphnia, bloodworms, mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp. A feeding routine involving multiple daily sessions is often beneficial for Buenos Aires Tetras. However, it's essential to remember that the portions given during each feeding session should be small. This practice promotes better digestion and helps maintain a cleaner tank environment by reducing excess food waste.
Origin and Environment
Hailing from the La Plata basin in South America, the Buenos Aires Tetra is native to the regions of Argentina, Paraguay, and Southeastern Brazil. This species thrives across a diverse array of water bodies, from tranquil ponds and lakes to flowing streams and the significant Uruguay and Parana Rivers. As a species accustomed to freshwater environments, Buenos Aires Tetras are particularly sensitive to pollution and elevated salinity levels. They flourish in clean, well-balanced aquatic settings that mirror their natural surroundings.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
