The Burmese Odessa Barb (Pethia Padamya) is an exceptional species, making a splendid contribution to any community aquarium with its vibrant appearance and adaptable nature. Capable of thriving in a broad range of water conditions, including those in unheated tanks, it is celebrated for its peaceable demeanour, robustness, and simple care requirements.

Burmese Odessa Barbs are not just beautiful; they are also highly social creatures. To meet their social and physiological needs, it is crucial to house them in groups of at least six. This reflects their natural behaviour and significantly contributes to their well-being in the aquarium environment, making them a superb choice for any aquarist.

Compatibility

Due to their peaceful disposition, Burmese Odessa Barbs offers a broad selection of potential tank mates. They are compatible with various non-predatory fish species that recognize them as companions rather than food. Suitable companions include other Barbs, Tetras, Rasboras, Bolivian Rams, and Apistogramma’s. Nonetheless, caution is advised if pairing them with fish with long fins or moving more slowly, as Burmese Odessa Barbs have been known to engage in fin-nipping. If you want to create an environment that allows these gorgeous fish to flourish, a slightly acidic tank with densely planted plants is the way to go. To create the ultimate Odessa Barb habitat, consider adding rocks, pebbles, sand, and small boulders to your aquarium setup. Hardy aquatic plants like Anubias and Microsorum will also benefit your fish. While strong filtration is unnecessary, these Barbs appreciate a degree of water movement and can thrive in a hill stream-type arrangement.

Diet

Burmese Odessa Barbs are not particularly selective about their diet. However, due to their high activity level, they possess a significant appetite. A diverse range of foods is recommended for optimal health. These fish readily accept flakes, granules, freeze-dried foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They will also enthusiastically consume vegetables, including cucumbers and lettuce.

Origin and Environment

The Burmese Odessa Barb thrives in the diverse landscapes of Southeast Asia, from Thailand to the Himalayas. These captivating fish inhabit still backwaters and ponds within large and mid-sized rivers, where lush vegetation and slightly acidic waters create an ideal environment. Their native range spans Bhutan, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Odessa, and Nepal, showcasing their adaptability to varied aquatic ecosystems. Foraging in muddy substrates, they contribute to the scenic beauty of their habitats, from the upper Chao Phraya Basin to the Meklong, upper Mekong, Salween, and Irrawaddy rivers.

Certain orders over £50 qualify for free mainland UK (excludes Northern Ireland, Pond Plants, and livestock) delivery which will arrive within 3-5 working days of the order being processed.

Orders Below £50 in Mainland UK will be charged a standard delivery fee of £5.99.

Pond Plant and Tropical/Marine/Pond Livestock will be charged a delivery fee of £19.99.
