The Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya), a stunning tropical freshwater fish from Sri Lanka, is a true gem in the aquarium world. Its vibrant colours and peaceful nature make it a prized addition to any tank, thriving in environments that mirror its natural habitat.
With their fascinating social dynamics and unique breeding habits, Cherry Barbs are a favourite among hobbyists. Keeping them in groups of six or more supports their social behaviour and allows for a captivating display of male rivalry as they vie for female attention and establish territories within the tank.
Compatibility
For a harmonious aquarium, Cherry Barbs coexist well with other peaceful, similarly-sized species like Tetras, Dwarf Rainbowfish, Rasboras, Catfish, and Plecos while avoiding larger fish that might view them as prey. Their ideal habitat mirrors the vibrant, intricate environments of Indian freshwater areas, necessitating a minimum tank size of 140 litres to cater to their schooling and exploratory needs. It's vital to meticulously maintain water conditions to replicate their natural habitat. The tank setup should feature a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate enriched with various aquatic plants such as Java Fern and Anubias to mimic dense vegetation and provide hiding spots. The addition of driftwood, rocks, and caves adds complexity and promotes natural behaviour, while a moderate water flow and efficient filtration system ensure a clean, oxygen-rich environment.
Diet
Cherry Barbs are not picky eaters, readily accepting a wide range of food, including flake and other dry foods formulated for tropical fish. To enrich their diet, it's advantageous to occasionally introduce supplementary treats like vegetables, daphnia, bloodworms, brine shrimp, plankton, and similar items. A diverse diet is key to maintaining the health and vitality of Cherry Barbs.
Origin and Environment
Cherry Barbs originate from the calm Kelani and Nilwala Rivers in Sri Lanka, flourishing in the verdant Southwest of the island. Their natural habitat is beneath a dense canopy that gently filters sunlight, creating soft, dappled illumination over the water. This picturesque environment is perfect for enhancing the Cherry Barbs' vibrant colours. Cherry Barbs are found in slow-moving, shallow rivers and streams and enjoy a bottom layer of silt or sand that provides a soft substrate. The riverbed, covered in a natural blend of fallen leaves and branches, offers Cherry Barbs shelter and food, creating an ideal setting for their lively behaviour and rich colouration.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
