The Demasoni Cichlid (Pseudotropheus demasoni), hailing from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, Africa, stands out with its striking blue and black vertical stripes, captivating aquarium enthusiasts.
Despite its small size, it displays significant aggression, requiring moderate to intricate care. Recommended for intermediate to advanced fishkeepers, managing this zebra-type Cichlid entails maintaining a single male alongside a sizable group of females to prevent potential harm to solitary females.
Compatibility
Due to its territorial nature, tank mates and group dynamics require careful consideration for a harmonious aquatic community. Demasoni Cichlids can coexist with other robust Mbuna species, but tank mates should avoid similar colour patterns to prevent aggression. It's advisable to introduce them last to prevent excessive territorial behaviour. Ensure the aquarium is at least 4 feet long, replicating a rocky reef with open sand areas. Use ocean rock to construct stable structures with ample crevices for exploration, accommodating the fish's digging behaviours. Mbuna often prefers darker substrates for enhanced colouration and security, with coral sand or Aragonite recommended for water hardness. Robust filtration is essential to manage the biological load resulting from their aggression.
Diet
Demasoni Cichlids display distinct feeding behaviours reflective of their predatory instincts. They primarily prey on small invertebrates and algae among rocky substrates in their natural habitat. In captivity, it's recommended to replicate their natural diet with high-quality flake or pellet foods, supplemented by occasional live or frozen protein sources like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Including vegetable matter such as spirulina-based foods or blanched vegetables supports their nutritional needs. Overfeeding should be avoided, as these cichlids are prone to digestive issues. A varied and balanced diet ensures their optimal health and vibrant coloration in aquarium settings.
Origin and Environment
Despite originating from Lake Malawi in Africa, Demasoni Cichlids are limited to specific habitats, primarily Pombo rocks and Ndumi reefs. They often gather in sizable groups within rocky areas, where the mineral-rich waters of surrounding rivers maintain a stable composition, aligning with their habitat preferences. In their natural environment, these Cichlids are frequently observed creating moderate-sized schools.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
