The Feather Fin Catfish (Synodontis eupterus), part of the Mochokidae family, is a unique freshwater fish from Central and West Africa's river basins that flourishes in various aquatic settings. Noted for its feather-like dorsal fin and calm nature, it is popular in aquariums. Its ability to adapt to different water conditions and distinctive look makes it a standout in community tanks.
A minimum of 200 litres is required for solitary feather Fin catfish to ensure sufficient space. A 500-litre tank is advised for a group of 3 to 4 to avoid territorial issues and promote health, with the final size depending on tank layout and decorations.
Compatibility
The semi-aggressive nature of the Feather Fin Catfish makes it less suitable for tanks with small, fragile fish or ornamental shrimp, given its size and behaviour. When selecting tank mates, opt for peaceful species larger than 5 cm to avoid predation, including Barbs, Gouramis, larger Tetras, Knifefish, Rainbowfish, sizable Loricariids, and certain durable West African Cichlids, while avoiding aggressive Malawi or Tanganyikan Cichlids due to their incompatible water needs and behaviour. The tank setup should include a soft sandy bottom, structures like bogwood, caves, or PVC tubes, and robust plants for shade alongside a spacious swimming area. Use external canister filters for waste management, ensure the water is well-oxygenated with moderate flow, and perform regular water changes to maintain nitrate levels. Installing heater guards can also prevent the catfish from burn injuries.
Diet
Feather Fin Catfish, in their natural settings, are nocturnal feeders that use their sensitive barbels to find and eat various food in the dark, including detritus, algae, small invertebrates, and aquatic insects. This versatility in their diet reflects their ability to adapt to different food sources across various aquatic environments. In captivity, mirroring this diverse diet is crucial for their health and well-being. Aquarists typically provide a balanced diet with commercial pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and vegetables to align with the Feather Fin Catfish's natural eating habits. Such feeding practices meet their nutritional requirements and promote their instinctive foraging behaviour, enhancing the health of these fascinating fish.
Origin and Environment
The Feather Fin Catfish is found across a wide array of habitats in key river basins such as Chad, Cross, Kwa Ibo, Niger, Volta, and White Nile, spanning countries like Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan in Central and West Africa. Its broad distribution underscores its exceptional adaptability to diverse environmental conditions, emphasizing its ecological significance in various freshwater ecosystems. Occupying riverine settings, the Feather Fin Catfish thrives in environments with abundant rocks and wood amidst relatively limited aquatic vegetation. It engages in diligent foraging, thoroughly exploring rocky caves, crevices, and areas around submerged logs and roots, showcasing its meticulous and strategic feeding behaviour.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
