The Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) is a small yet remarkable freshwater fish. It is valued for its captivating look and low maintenance, making it a popular choice among aquarists worldwide.
Glowlight Tetras exhibit a calm and graceful nature, making them ideal for community tanks with fish of similar size and temperament. Their sociable and friendly behaviour, combined with ease of care, marks them as a top option for novice aquarium enthusiasts. In groups of six or more, Glowlight Tetras reveal their true, vibrant colours and dynamic presence, adding life and colour to any aquarium. They are typically found swimming in the lower parts of the tank, enhancing the visual appeal of their environment.
Compatibility
Glowlight Tetras thrive in community tanks, mixing well with other small, peaceful fish like Tetras, Guppies, Platies, Swordtails, Mollies, Corydoras Catfish, and Gouramis. They are also beneficial as dither fish for Dwarf Cichlids in larger setups, such as Bolivian Rams and Kribensis Cichlids, but should not be paired with larger, aggressive species to prevent stress and harm. These fish prefer tanks lush with plants for hiding, as well as setups with bogwood and leaf litter, ensuring open areas remain for swimming. Adaptable to tap water, Glowlight Tetras show their brightest colours in soft, slightly tannin-tinted water with low lighting.
Diet
Feeding Glowlight Tetras involves offering a balanced mix of foods in small amounts. A foundation of their nutrition should include high-quality crushed flakes and micro pellets, which they readily accept. To ensure comprehensive nutrition, it's crucial to incorporate variety into their diet. Live and frozen foods, like brine shrimp and mosquito larvae, are favoured by Glowlight Tetras. Notably, they feed at the surface and ignore food that sinks to the bottom. To prevent digestive issues and maintain water quality, avoid overfeeding and carefully regulate their diet.
Origin and Environment
The Glowlight Tetra originates in the Essequibo Basin in Guyana, South America. They've been discovered in the Potaro, Rio Essequibo, and Mazaruni Rivers, adding to their global appeal. In their natural habitat, the Glowlight Tetra inhabits forested areas in small tributaries off the main river channel. The water in these serene streams is usually stained a dark brown colour with tannins from decaying organic matter and is often soft and highly acidic, providing the perfect environment for these remarkable fish to thrive.
