Angelfish, the iconic stars of the freshwater aquarium, are part of the Cichlidae family. Their graceful swimming style and stunning appearance make them highly sought after for large community tanks. While it's rare to find wild Angelfish, most in the market are bred in captivity. In their natural habitat, these fish sport a silver hue with vertical stripes, but thanks to selective breeding, we now have a variety of colour patterns and the beautiful long-finned 'veiltail' variants.
Although most Angelfish sold are Pterophyllum scalare, P. altum occasionally appears in the market. The smallest and most aggressive species, P. leopoldi, is seldom seen. Despite their generally peaceful nature, Angelfish can display typical Cichlid aggressiveness towards each other, particularly during spawning attempts.
Compatibility
Angelfish, though not inherently aggressive, are opportunistic feeders and may consume smaller fish that fit into their mouths. Suitable tankmates for these fish include larger Tetras, Rasboras, Gouramis, peaceful Barbs, Rainbowfish, Corydoras, and medium-sized Catfish. Angelfish can coexist with Discus in larger tanks maintained above 82° F. Angelfish need room to grow, so a spacious tank is a must, with a minimum of 250 litres recommended for adult fish. Their tall, vertical body shape is best suited for tall aquariums. The tank should have a gentle water flow and be adorned with large broadleaf plants and vertically arranged driftwood to mimic their natural habitat. Floating plants are a plus, as they provide shade and cover. The substrate should be fine to medium-grained, smooth gravel to aid in their foraging. Captive-raised Angelfish are adaptable to various water conditions but prefer warmer water, with temperatures best maintained between 78° and 84° F. The ideal pH is between 7.0 and 8.0, with a hardness of 3 to 8 dKH (54 to 145 ppm). Effective filtration and regular water changes of 10% weekly or 25% biweekly are essential to maintain optimal water quality.
Diet
Angelfish are versatile eaters, foraging for worms and small crustaceans at the bottom in the wild, but they're also comfortable feeding at the surface or mid-water. They thrive on a diet of Tropical Flakes, Colour Flakes, Tropical Granules, and Shrimp Pellets. To keep them healthy and ready for breeding, offer frozen and live foods as occasional treats. For a well-rounded diet, rotate their food daily and feed them quantities they can finish within 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.
Origin and Environment
Angelfish are indigenous to a vast region of tropical South America, predominantly within the expansive Amazon River system. This includes parts of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and smaller areas in countries like Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. They naturally inhabit tranquil, slow-moving waters. In the wild, Angelfish favour shadowy environments, often found beneath overhanging vegetation or amidst trees that have toppled into the river, providing them with shelter and protection.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
