The Golden Gourami (Trichopodus Trichopterus) is a vibrant and robust freshwater fish, ideal for aquarium enthusiasts, including beginners. Native to Southeast Asia, it's adaptable to various conditions, thriving in many aquarium environments.
Yet, it's more aggressive than other Gouramis, especially males, who may become hostile with growth, exhibiting behaviours like attacking smaller fish. Despite being sold in pairs, Golden Gouramis do not pair for life. Males may court multiple females, who in the confined space of an aquarium, cannot escape unwanted attention. To mitigate this, it's recommended to house multiple females per male to spread his attention and minimize stress.
Compatibility
Golden Gouramis prefer a peaceful environment and are incompatible with aggressive, fast-moving fish. Choose tank mates like Plecostomus, Cherry Barbs, and Mystery Snails, which have similar temperaments and care needs. Avoid fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs and Blue Tetras, and do not pair with species smaller than 4 inches to prevent aggression. The Golden Gourami's ability to breathe atmospheric air requires open access to the water's surface in a tank with ample vegetation and spaces mimicking a marsh or swamp for hiding. Ensure the tank is at least 90 cm (36 inches) long and uses a filtration system with gentle to moderate flow, like a sponge filter, to match their preference against strong currents.
Diet
The Golden Gourami, being an omnivorous species, has a diverse diet that includes live, frozen, freeze-dried and flake foods. Providing a high-quality flake or granular food as a staple diet is recommended, which can be supplemented with various substitutes such as bloodworms, white worms, and brine shrimp. An occasional feeding of blanched vegetables can also be provided to maintain a balanced diet.
Origin and Environment
The Golden Gourami, a colour variant developed from the Three Spot Gourami, entered the aquarium trade in 1970. This particular breed, created through selective breeding, does not have a natural habitat due to its origins in captivity. These Gouramis are widely distributed across Southeast Asia and Indonesia, preferring shallow water areas with low flow.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
