The Moonlight Gourami (Trichopodus microlepis) is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, admired for its serene nature and captivating appearance. With iridescent scales reminiscent of moonlight, this species adds elegance to aquariums and is popular among hobbyists for its peaceful disposition and easy care.
Moonlight Gouramis generally demonstrate remarkable compatibility in community environments, despite their potential for significant size. Whether housed alone, in pairs, or in groups, their adaptability shines through given adequate space in the aquarium. When kept in groups, ensuring an abundance of hiding places is crucial to prevent potential instances of bullying among individuals.
Compatibility
Moonlight Gouramis are compatible with peaceful species but may face challenges with territorial fish. Male Moonlight Gouramis can become territorial, especially post-breeding. Ideal tank mates include medium-sized, calm tropical fish like Angelfish, Corydoras, and Amano Shrimp. Care should be taken to avoid fin-nipping species like Tiger Barbs or Siamese Fighting Fish. It's best to refrain from introducing very small fish, especially during their juvenile stage. Moonlight Gouramis require spacious tanks, ideally 90-115 litres, with temperatures between 77°F and 86°F resembling their natural habitat. Various substrates are suitable, and a mix of tropical plants, including sturdy options like Java fern, is recommended to provide hiding spots. A gentle filtration system is preferred to prevent fish exhaustion.
Diet
Moonlight Gouramis exhibit omnivorous feeding habits, consuming zooplankton, crustaceans, and aquatic insects in their natural habitat. In aquarium settings, they readily consume prepared flake and tablet foods, along with live options such as bloodworms or tubifex worms, which they enthusiastically chase. It's crucial to include high-quality flake food in their diet to fulfill their vitamin needs, supplemented with offerings like white worms, bloodworms, or brine shrimp. Fresh vegetables and vegetable tablets can also be provided. Feeding once or twice daily is typically sufficient to maintain their health and vitality.
Origin and Environment
The Moonlight Gourami can be found in the tropical regions of Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, thriving in shallow, still, or slowly moving waters with plenty of vegetation, such as swamps, ponds, bogs, and lakes. They can also be found in the floodplains of the Mekong River, where they have adapted to the unique and challenging environment of this powerful waterway. One of the most remarkable features of the Moonlight Gourami is their adaptability, which has made them a popular species for reproduction in captivity in several parts of the world. However, their success in captivity has also led to their introduction as an obtrusive species in both Columbia and Singapore, where they have taken root and become a part of the local ecosystem.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
