The Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) may not require extensive care but is not recommended for beginners or newly set up aquariums due to their sensitivity to stress. Yet, for the seasoned aquarist, these enchanting fish promise to be a splendid addition.
Displaying a vibrant shoal of iridescent Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish in a densely planted community tank offers an impressive and engaging spectacle. Maintaining these fish in groups of at least six is advisable, as they greatly contribute to the activity and colour palette of the tank's upper and middle levels.
Compatibility
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish are harmonious additions to diverse community tanks, coexisting peacefully with a variety of species without endangering aquatic flora. They are particularly compatible with other non-aggressive fish like Tetras, Rasboras, and Dwarf Cichlids. To avoid stressing the Rainbowfish, it is wise to avoid pairing them with larger, more dominant species. For optimal comfort and space for Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish, the aquarium should be no less than 3 feet in length. Strategically arranging aquatic plants and bogwood along the perimeter and back creates a labyrinth of exploration for these fish, while maintaining an open swimming area in the centre. Employing floating plants can mitigate the effects of bright lighting, fostering a more naturalistic habitat. Given their tendency to jump, securing the aquarium with a tight-fitting lid is crucial for their safety.
Diet
The Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish demonstrates a flexible feeding behaviour, showing little fussiness in their dietary choices. To ensure their best health and condition, integrating high-quality micro pellets, flakes, granules, and green flakes into their diet as staple food items is advisable. Regular offerings of frozen or freeze-dried foods, including bloodworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and tubifex worms, are beneficial for maintaining their overall well-being and accentuating their brilliant colours.
Origin and Environment
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish are native to the vibrant freshwater streams of the Mamberamo region in Western New Guinea, part of Southeast Asia. These exquisite fish flourish in clear, swiftly flowing waters with soft and acidic conditions, situated near the principal river courses. Their presence extends to the surrounding marshes and swamps. Preferring environments rich in aquatic plants, submerged logs, and roots, these areas provide ideal conditions for shelter and foraging.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
