Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are a common and highly recommended addition to freshwater aquariums all over. They’re simple to care for, they get along well with their tank mates, and they’re a ton of fun to look at. Also, they love to snack on algae in your tank which is a major benefit in itself.
Cherry Shrimp prefer safety in numbers, thriving better in larger groups (aim for at least ten shrimp). Larger groups discourage dominance competition among individuals. When these shrimp feel secure, they exhibit brighter colors, enhancing the visual appeal of the aquarium. Their active behavior, including grazing on tank surfaces, becomes more prominent in such environments.
Compatibility
Cherry Shrimp generally coexist peacefully with other tank mates, but their small size makes them vulnerable to predation. Therefore, it's essential to house them with similarly sized aquarium shrimp for their safety. Compatible tank mates include Amano shrimp, Ghost shrimp, and Vampire shrimp, as well as small tetras, plecos, and gouramis. Bottom-feeding catfish are also suitable companions. Avoid large or predatory fish that may prey on Cherry shrimp to ensure their well-being in the tank. Cherry shrimp care is straightforward, requiring stable water conditions to thrive. These low-maintenance shrimp are adaptable to tank life but are sensitive to fluctuations in water quality, particularly to chlorine, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Cherry shrimp thrive in environments with abundant aquatic plants and a moderate current. These plants provide both food and hiding spots for the shrimp, contributing to their overall well-being. Driftwood can also be included in the tank as it serves as a source of food and shelter, particularly when covered in algae and moss. Java Moss, a versatile plant, is highly recommended for Cherry shrimp tanks as it offers hiding places and serves as a grooming and feeding area. Additionally, the presence of plants and moss aids in water quality by filtering out toxins, promoting a healthier environment for the shrimp. Pebbles can be added to mimic the natural rocky bottom that Cherry shrimp are accustomed to, as well as to collect debris for them to consume. While specific lighting is not necessary, standard aquarium lighting is beneficial for observing the shrimp. Cherry Shrimp have a low bioload, minimizing waste production and aiding in water quality management, which is advantageous for novice aquarists. When using filtration systems, precautions should be taken to prevent shrimp from being sucked in, as they are a dwarf species. Using a sponge filter or partially blocking filter inlets can mitigate this risk. Proper tank cycling before introducing any animals is also crucial for their well-being.
Diet
In their natural habitat, Cherry Shrimp display omnivorous feeding habits, consuming both plant matter and small organisms. In a well-established aquarium, various microorganisms naturally develop on tank surfaces, serving as a supplementary food source for the shrimp. While a high-quality pellet diet serves as their primary nutrition, supplemented with boiled and blanched vegetables such as cucumber, spinach, zucchini, lettuce, and carrots, it's crucial to avoid pellets containing high levels of copper, as Cherry shrimp are sensitive to metal concentrations. Additionally, it's essential to remove any uneaten food within two hours to prevent overfeeding and maintain optimal water conditions.
Origin and Environment
Cherry Shrimp, freshwater invertebrates native to the streams and ponds of Taiwan in Southeast Asia, are highly adaptable creatures capable of thriving in diverse water conditions. Their resilience extends to breeding in captivity with ease. Through selective breeding efforts, these Dwarf Shrimp exhibit a striking array of vibrant colours and variations, with females typically displaying more intense pigmentation.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
