Red Phantom Tetras (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) are ideal examples of peaceful community aquarium fish. They flourish best when part of a lively shoal, ideally comprising eight or more members.
Introducing a mixed-sex group enhances their social dynamics, as Red Phantom Tetras exhibit fascinating temporary dominance hierarchies. This leads to striking displays, particularly among males vying for female attention, resulting in engaging behaviours and intensified colours in larger groups.
Compatibility
When choosing tank mates for Red Phantom Tetras, consider their preference for slightly cooler tropical temperatures. Red Phantom Tetras are less hardy than Black Phantom Tetras, so they're best added to an established aquarium. Ideal companions include similarly-sized Characids, Hatchetfish, Pencilfish, and smaller Catfish, as well as Loaches and small to medium non-predatory Cichlids, which add diversity to the tank.
For an optimal environment, create a lush, shaded setting with plenty of plants. Floating plants like water lettuce, duckweed, or Salvinia enhance the beauty, while a sandy substrate, driftwood, and leaf litter provide natural cover and security for these fish.
Diet
Red Phantom Tetras in the wild have a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, crustaceans, algae, and fallen fruit. In an aquarium, they can be fed high-quality dried foods, but a diverse diet is beneficial for their health. Supplementing their feeding with live, frozen, or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Daphnia, and Moina is recommended. This variety in their diet helps maintain their health, vitality, and bright colours.
Origin and Environment
Red Phantom Tetras originate from the upper and middle Rio Orinoco Basin in South America, inhabiting areas across Colombia and Venezuela, particularly in Amazonas, Apure, Guarico, and Bolivar. They are found in major tributaries like the Guaviare, Inirida, Capanaparo, Ventauri, Meta, Cinaruco, Rios Atabapo, Arauca, Apure, and Caura. These fish prefer the smaller rivers, minor tributaries, flooded forests, and oxbows, avoiding the main river channels. Their habitats are characterized by clear waters with sandy substrates, dense riparian vegetation, and aquatic plants, providing shelter and refuge. Red Phantom Tetras are also found in flowing blackwater habitats and calm floodplain lakes, showcasing their adaptability. The regions they inhabit undergo significant seasonal changes, with rivers and wetlands experiencing extensive flooding during the rainy season.
