The Red Rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus), a prominent freshwater fish, is renowned for its vibrant colours and lively nature, hailing from Western New Guinea's tranquil waters.
Males in particular exhibit a brilliant red coloration, enchanting enthusiasts and aquarists. With an elongated body and swift swimming, it flourishes in settings akin to its natural habitat. For optimal display of their beauty, maintaining groups of six or more, with both males and females, is recommended.
Compatibility
Despite their larger adult size, the Red Rainbowfish's narrow mouth precludes them from preying on smaller tankmates. However, their rapid movements may stress smaller species, and their young could be at risk. Selecting tankmates wisely is key, with compatible species including other Rainbowfish, Barbs, Danios, and Catfish, while avoiding aggressive plant-eaters like certain Cichlids and Puffers. The Red Rainbowfish is an ideal candidate for planted community tanks, requiring at least a 4-foot aquarium due to its active nature and size. Although juveniles may seem less colourful, once acclimatized to a well-planted tank, they quickly reveal their vibrant adult hues. Moderate to gentle water flow suits their needs, ensuring a harmonious environment.
Diet
The Red Rainbowfish is not a fastidious eater and readily accepts a variety of food sources. A high-quality diet consisting of micro pellets, flakes, granules, and green flakes should be the primary source of nutrition. To enhance their vibrancy and overall health, periodic feedings of freeze-dried or frozen food, such as mosquito larvae, tubifex, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, are recommended.
Origin and Environment
Red Rainbowfish are native to the Northeastern region of West Papua New Guinea, near the city of Jayapura. These remarkable fish are found exclusively in Lake Sentani and its connecting streams, which are surrounded by hilly terrain, creating a unique and breathtaking environment for these beautiful fish. The Red Rainbowfish inhabits streams with very clear, warm water and rapidly moving currents, as well as dense vegetation and bogwood. However, these precious fish are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to the human population growth in the area. Like all Rainbowfish, Red Rainbowfish are sensitive to water changes, and the introduction of pollutants and waste into their waters can be detrimental to their survival.
