The Red Fin Shark (Epalzeorhynchos Frenatum) is a captivating addition to aquariums, renowned for its striking appearance. However, their beauty belies a tendency for aggression, often displayed through head-and-tail butting, biting, and territorial behaviour, especially towards their own species.
Larger Red Fin Sharks can be particularly territorial, posing a risk to smaller tankmates and potentially leaping out of the tank. The number of Rainbow Sharks to keep in an aquarium depends on factors such as tank size, compatibility with other fish, and individual behaviour. Generally, it's advisable to keep only one Red Fin Shark per aquarium, particularly in smaller tanks, to prevent aggression and territorial conflicts. In larger tanks with ample hiding spots, multiple Red Fin Sharks may be kept, but careful observation of their behaviour is necessary to avoid aggression.
Compatibility
Juvenile Red Fin Sharks, though initially timid and prone to hiding, can pose a challenge for novice aquarists due to their innate aggression. However, they generally coexist well with Barbs, Rainbowfish, Danios, Loaches, Plecos, Rasboras, and Gouramis, typically occupying the top and middle tank sections. Larger freshwater shrimp species may also share the tank, though their eggs or fry could be at risk. Smaller, more timid fish should be avoided to prevent displacement by Red Fin Sharks. Decor-wise, Red Fin Sharks are undemanding, requiring ample cover. They typically do not harm soft-leaved plants. To mimic their natural habitat, a substrate of rocks, gravel, and large boulders can be used, along with driftwood roots, branches, and hardy aquatic plants for aesthetic enhancement. As inhabitants of flowing water, Red Fin Sharks are sensitive to organic waste accumulation and necessitate a habitat with adequate dissolved oxygen and moderate water flow.
Diet
Red Fin Sharks are known for their fairly unfussy eating habits, readily consuming most food items that descend to the tank's bottom. To foster optimal health and a strong immune system, it's recommended that these fish be offered a varied diet. This can be achieved by providing them with a mix of algae wafers or tablets, insect larvae, frozen or live foods, and zooplankton. Furthermore, blanched vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, and peas can act as a nutritious and delightful addition to their usual feeding regimen. Serving a diversified diet will not only meet the nutritional needs of Red Fin Sharks but also add enrichment to their feeding experience.
Origin and Environment
Originating from the Southeast Asian regions of Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, and Myanmar, Red Fin Sharks are inherently at home in pristine, warm, freshwater rivers abundant in plankton with sandy bottoms. These serene waters serve as their dwelling place, where they actively explore the riverbed for sustenance and refuge. Intriguingly, Red Fin Sharks display a propensity to migrate to floodplains, inundated fields, and forests during heavy rainfall or flood periods. This remarkable adaptability enables them to prosper even amidst shifting conditions, marking them as a truly distinctive and fascinating species.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
