The Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques) is a vibrant, energetic, and resilient fish. Its distinctive features and low-maintenance nature make it highly sought after by professionals and hobbyists alike.
Serpae Tetras are known for fin-nipping, a behaviour that's challenging with long-finned ornamental fish. A careful selection of tank mates is essential. Keeping them in groups of 10 or more in large tanks with plenty of plants and decorations helps reduce this behaviour. However, the striking colouration of Serpae Tetras plays a major role in their sustained appeal among aquarium enthusiasts.
Compatibility
Due to the extensive distribution range of this species, Serpae Tetras are compatible with both subtropical and tropical species. However, they tend to exhibit heightened activity levels in a tropical tank setting. It is important to note that slow-eating species or those that prefer more tranquil tank mates are not ideally suited to cohabit with Serpae Tetras.
Creating an optimal habitat for your Serpae Tetra is critical to ensure its well-being and contentment. In their natural environment, these fish inhabit blackwater conditions. This can be simulated in captivity by incorporating aquarium-safe peat into the tank. Before introducing Serpae Tetras into a new aquatic setup, it's imperative to establish the appropriate water parameters. Maintaining the health of these fish requires thorough cycling of the tank to guarantee ideal pH, ammonia, and nitrate levels. Closely replicating their natural habitat and diligently monitoring water conditions are key contributors to the successful upkeep and flourishing of your Serpae Tetras.
Diet
Serpae Tetras exhibit flexible eating habits and accept a broad spectrum of food options. As omnivores, their diet can include standard flake or pellet food, ground grains and vegetables. They also appreciate occasional treats of small live or frozen foods, such as insects, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. This dietary diversity keeps them engaged and provides a comprehensive range of nutrients, supporting their overall well-being and colouration. Given that Serpae Tetras have small mouths, offering food in appropriate sizes is crucial. This ensures ease of eating and prevents feeding difficulties, enabling them to benefit from their diverse nutritional intake fully.
Origin and Environment
Serpae Tetras are native to the rich and dynamic ecosystems of the Amazon basin, notably inhabiting the Guapore and Paraguay River Basins that span Brazil, Argentina, and upper Paraguay. In these environments, they favour calm or stationary backwaters, including diverse aquatic habitats like lakes, ponds, and streams. Commonly found congregating near tree roots and within lush vegetation, these areas provide them with both sustenance and a safe haven.
Has this tank got a separate power plug for the lighting?
Yes it has. You will require three power plugs for this aquarium.
One for the light unit, one for the heater and one for the filter pump.
Can it be mounted on suction cups and are there cut outs on the filter case to install these by?
No, the M Bioflow does not have any suction cups to hold the filter to the aquarium. There are no holes on the filter designed to hold such suction clips.
