The Sterbai Cory (Corydoras sterbai) is a captivating species in the aquarist community, distinguished by its unique armour-like bony plates and a striking pattern of black spots and stripes on a light background. Native to South America, this fish is not only visually appealing but also plays a crucial role as a bottom-dweller and scavenger, contributing to the cleanliness of the aquarium.
With their peaceful and sociable nature, Sterbai Corys is a fascinating choice for community tanks. Sterbai Corys thrives in groups and is best kept in schools of at least six to display social behaviours and enhance tank dynamics. This species is particularly suited to planted and community aquariums, adding to the visual charm and maintaining a balanced environment.
Compatibility
When choosing tankmates for Sterbai Corys, opt for smaller, peaceful species to ensure a tranquil aquarium environment. Suitable companions include Cyprinids, Characins, Dwarf Cichlids, Gouramis, and other Corydoras, all of whom share a gentle demeanour and can coexist harmoniously with these Catfish. For the well-being of Sterbai Corydoras, maintain them in soft water settings with a soft sand substrate to mimic their natural habitat and protect their delicate sensory barbels. This arrangement not only supports their health but also promotes natural foraging behaviours, thereby enhancing the vitality and authenticity of your aquarium. Additionally, planted areas and hiding spots should be included to provide shelter when the fish are not actively foraging.
Diet
To ensure the optimal health and vibrant colouration of Sterbai Corys, provide a varied and balanced diet. As omnivores, they adapt well to various foods, from dried to live and frozen options. To meet their nutritional needs, their diet should primarily consist of high-quality flakes and sinking pellets. Occasionally, supplement their diet with live worms and frozen brine shrimp for added variety and to mimic natural feeding habits. These additions provide extra nutrition and encourage natural foraging behaviours, enhancing the health and vitality of Sterbai Corys in your aquarium.
Origin and Environment
Sterbai Corys are native to the upper Rio Guapore in Brazil, with habitats extending into Bolivia and other parts of South America. They typically inhabit small tributaries, creeks, and flooded forest areas rich in lush vegetation, providing shelter and a thriving ecosystem.
In their natural habitats, these fish flourish in soft, acidic waters with sandy substrates, allowing them to forage comfortably without harming their delicate barbels. To support their well-being, their preference for gently flowing waters and environments rich in aquatic plants should be mirrored in home aquariums.
