The Weather Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) may not be the most colourful fish, but its lovable behaviour make it a great addition to any temperate aquarium.

These sturdy, active fish are perfect for beginners because of their peaceful nature. They can even get used to being touched or hand-fed. They're happiest in groups of three or more and get along well with other mild fish that like similar temperatures and swim higher up in the tank. Remember, any tank mates should be okay with the Weather Loach's active ways.

Compatibility:

The Weather Loach thrives in the company of medium to large, active fish that prefer the upper regions of the aquarium. It is often recommended as a tank mate for robust Goldfish varieties like Comets or Shubunkins. However, caution is advised when pairing them with more delicate, slower-moving Goldfish, as the Weather Loach's energetic nature, particularly during feeding, may be overwhelming. It's crucial to thoroughly research the size, water temperature, and other environmental needs of any potential tank mates to ensure a harmonious aquatic community.

As Weather Loaches grow to a considerable size, they require ample space for adequate movement. While these loaches are somewhat tolerant of suboptimal water conditions, they thrive best in clean, well-oxygenated environments. A substrate of fine sand is ideal, as it protects their sensitive barbels and allows for their natural burrowing behaviour. Incorporate elements like bogwood and various hiding places to provide a sense of security. Additionally, a secure lid is a must for your aquarium, as Weather Loaches are known for their ability to escape from open or loosely covered tanks.

Diet:

For the best health of Weather Loaches in an aquarium, it's a good idea to give them a variety of foods. They like sinking dry foods like pellets and wafers, but you should also mix in some small live and frozen foods, like bloodworm, artemia, and daphnia. Regularly feeding them different kinds of food helps ensure they get all the necessary nutrients.

Origin and Environment:

The Weather Loach originates from diverse locales like Siberia, Korea, Japan, China, northern Vietnam, Sakhalin Island, and potentially Laos. Their natural habitats are calm or stagnant waters - think streams, rivers, swamps, backwaters, oxbows, and rice paddies - with plenty of plants or submerged branches, roots, and leaves. These areas usually have a soft, silty or muddy bottom, which is just the kind of place where Weather Loaches do well.

With their distinct behaviour and resilience, Weather Loaches are a fascinating choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.
